I'm is no Bible totin' creationist. The first
chapter of the Bible is an ancient myth from the fertile crescent.
Bible creation stories are indeed myth which project the universal experience,
almost universal, of God as creator in terms of an ancient science,
cosmology. Actually not a science since the scientific method lay
thousands of years in the future.
So, the Bible's understanding, mythical not scientific,
of how God made heaven and earth was in terms of a three-tier universe
heaven above, hell below the earth and our world in between. This
neat little world was all surrounded by the primordial waters.
Pretty primitive and pretty stupid when viewed from the science molded
by the great minds like Einstein and Hawkings in the last century.
And, of course, Charles Darwin.
Yes, I respect the theories of Darwin and Einstein
but I don't
worship them. I truly believe God created the
universe. And it was
God's mighty word that brought forth the worlds.
Then, God used evolution
to bring forth the varied forms of life upon earth.
After a few million years God called upon a rich, not so idle, English
gentleman and biologist, Chas. Darwin to explain life's development through
the ages right through to homo sapiens.
To me, there is no inherent conflict between
modern science's 14 billion year old universe and the statement "In
the beginning God created the heavens and the earth..."
We can go on happily worshipping a marvelous creating God as long as we
don't try to make our religious documents or even our state of the art
science absolute unchanging descriptions of how God created millions
of stars, worlds and eventually humans beings.
This evolution site by Qbaal features some of
the thoughts that have come to him now and then re how one can be
a Christian and a Darwinian at the same time. Indeed,
I see it very difficult to be a honest Christian unless he/she embraces
brother Darwin with all his heart along with many of his observations
on the origin of species. And let's leave 1 Genesis not on the scrap
heap of history but in a museum featuring some of the great cultural achievements
of the human race that we eventually outgrew as we evolved culturally
beyond them.
