This Garfield cartoon reminds me of Libertarius
who publishes
hard hitting critiques of conservative Christians
on alt.christnet
and other forums. I wonder why I'm reminded?
It's obvious to me Libertarius has sat at the feet
of the historical-
critical school of theolgy. In fact, he
is as well educated in New
and Old Testament studies as 50% of the Revs. spouting
forth
this Sunday from pulpits of various denominations.
Maybe 99%.
This post is a tribute to Libertarius for putting
his nose to the
grindstone to carefully read what the
best minds of Christendom,
and Judaism, have said bout the Bible and Church doctrine
for
about three or four hundred years and longer. It's obvious
Libertar-
ius doesn't agree with everything they say since he's either an atheist
or an agnostic. Still, he is very strongly informed re what
the modern
liberal theologians are saying. And he doesn't mind passing it on
to n
ot so enlightened Christians.
Why the tribute? Just read one or two of
the hundreds of posts cranked
out each year by Libertarius. Invaribly,
he is spinning up another
overly-conservative Christian (who gives the world
the impression Christian
thinkers and spokesmen have not had an original idea
since Eve fell and the
sun set on the Garden of Eden). On such stuck-
in- first- century- Palestinian-
mud Christians Liberarius and those over on alt.atheism
have a royal feast.
Makes you wonder - Are many Christians
not being spun up on modern
theology or are too many Christians sleeping
through the sermons?
And when it comes to important issues in the
Church it's always
the same thing. No reference to modern knowledge.
Not one
verse of the Bible can be corrected in the light of
modern science
and biology. Psychology is of the devil.
And so whether its abortion,
evolution, homosexual justice issues or feminist
claims it always the
counter-claim and disdain -"The Bible says...."
But Libertarius knows
the Bible says a lot of things and a lot of
them should be given a good
whack and silenced along with the
dangerous proponents of a literally-
true Bible from stem to stern.
