Which leads the shopper
to ask..
I
know just how the shopper woman feels! I drink a cola without
sugar,
no
salt, no caffeine and wonder what I'm paying for!? Water only??
The
cartoon, for me, points to the anger and frustration of many modern
Christians
raised on the "old time religion" which may have been
good
enough for David, Peter or Mary ( AD 40). But is not good enough
for
most moderns. Not just the eggheads at Yale but the man on the street.
Or
the woman sitting in the pew. Yeah, I know I've turned the cartoon's
meaning
on
it head. Who cares! Jesus himself specialized in putting many
a
zinger
in his parables. Just to check if his listeners were truly listening.
Maybe.
Yes,
it may be comforting for some that angels sing in the night when God
jumps
into history in a baby, tells the wind to shut up and calm down as
a
sure fire sign of divine presence, and in Jesus flexes divine muscle
by
raising
his friend Lazarus back to life. Or splashes around divine blood
on
a
cross as an eternal sign God's enmity and hatred of sin/sinners is
covered
and
turned to everlasting love. Well,
that's the old time story. And it had its
divine
use and effectiveness, back then. But not now.
So,
if you are still
serving
up the verities of the faith those who now lap itup will wise up sooner
or
later. And lose spiritual substance as they wasteaway on bread
served
up
in some churches but is devoid of all nourishment. Then the angry
"thins"
will
ask "Where is the food section?" Chew
on that, folk. Actually, buy a
recent
book by Marcus Borg, or Tom Harpur. Or Hans Kung etc. etc.
Someone
who
knows the Bible and knows that Jesus can be interpreted very well in
modern
terms. Modern terms that are often actually closer than ever to the
spirit
and real words of Jesus of Nazareth.
