Footprints, above,
is actually a modern symbol for Jesus Christ.
The large foot-
prints represent Jesus Christ, the Big
Man. Big in terms of compassion, courage
and wisdom.
Of course, I did not invent
the image. Maybe the writer of the poem Footprints.
Footprints is a modern symbol for Jesus. It is not so spectacular as New Testament images of Jesus. You know Jesus walking on the water. Jesus controlling the wind and waves. Jesus raising folk from the dead. But, footprints in the sand are more rational and scientific. Yet , still depicts the universal, caring spirit of God made known to us in Jesus of Nazareth.
The New Testament Jesus possesses extraordinary powers to backup his major role as the savior sent from heaven to break into our world as the divine rescuer. So, miracles are the order of the day. "Who is this that even the winds and waves obey." It's a neat trick when Jesus walks on water. And it's easy to believe Peter could not step out of the boat to join Jesus for his on-the-surface stroll without sinking like a rock. Unfortunately, he didn't have the faith required.
Modern folk refuse to take Jesus walking on water literally.
So now it's
Even the modern, rational symbol of
Jesus walking with us on the beach of life can
not be taken literally. Obviously, the
spiritual Jesus does not leave prints in the sand. The symbol
points to the spiritual reality of God's presence felt
in our hearts through Jesus Christ at all
times in life. Through thick and thin.
Of course, the ancient myth or legend of
Jesus walking on water also points to
the spiritual power of Jesus
as mediator of the saving power of God for
his people. The walking on water deal is definitely not
empirical historical fact. Its about the spiritual
reality of God known to us through Jesus Christ.
