Heaven

Chet Fischer <cfischer@runet.edu> wrote in article

It is interesting that a recent Time magazine poll found that 80-90% of Americans believe in "heaven" which is defined in my dictionary as "the abode of God and of the righteous after death." My question is where is this place? Can we spot it with the Hubble telescope? Can we do a drive...?

The  80-90% figure is also the number of  Americans  that believe in God.   And ,  I believe  there is a real connection between the two.

The Resurrection of  Jesus Christ  is not so much about  an empty tomb,  whether  or not dogs ate his body on some Jerusalem garbage heap,  incredible, inconsistent  physical resurrection stories and finally a resurrected Lord hopping up into the clouds on his way to the edge of the universe  only  10 billion light years away??!!?

In the final analysis  'Jesus is Risen'   is  more about the existence and nature of  God  (and  the nature of Jesus) than about  a  physical   flesh and blood  Jesus  running round  Jerusalem or Galilee after  nailed to a tree and dying there. Jesus is elevated into eternity with God and alive evermore.   So,  when Christians say  He is not among the dead  but  living   they are  truly affirming their   belief  in

      1.  The existence  of  God

      2.  A  God  who is  loving  and has the wherewithal  to conquer  death

      3.  A God who has revealed  himself, his love  and power  in  Jesus Christ

The Resurrection Stories  are  not historical  happenings  of  2000 years ago.  They are about God's  act of  raising  Jesus to eternity  and  the  reality of  Jesus Christ  still being present to his
   followers  here and now.
