I've got enough guilt to start my own religion" - Tori Amos
The Church has made a big deal of sin. To the point of saying God himself
was nailed in the person of Jesus to a cross and only then did the Almighty
get in the mood to forgive humans. Or to put it another way, sin is such
an affront to the supreme divine majesty that without the shedding of human
blood, God cannot bring himself to reconcile with the sinner.
No one is saying sin is a good thing. Although, as Martin Luther observed,
greed is good for the economy and lust has issued forth in many a child's
arrival on earth.
In any case, the wag's comment at page top reveals clearly the Church's
obsession with guilt and sin through the centuries. At least the Church
did take Jesus advise and discouraged stoning sinners and recommended,
instead, lighting candles, confession, etc as sin's remedy.
